What is Blepharoplasty?

Dr Maeve blepharoplasty laser ennis

Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids. With age, eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess skin and fat can gather above and below your eyelids. This can cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under the eyes.

Blepharoplasty – Eyelid surgery is the gold standard to correct eyelid hooding, sagging, bulging and tired-looking eyes.  During a short operation (normally between 1 and 3 hours), excess skin and/or fat is removed from the upper and/or lower eyelids to create a fresher and more youthful look

How do we treat it?

1. Precise Incision Placement

We begin by making a careful incision along the natural skin lines of the eyelid. This ensures any scars remain fine and discreet, blending seamlessly into the natural crease of your eye.

2. Removal of Excess Skin & Fat

For upper eyelids, we remove excess skin & fat that can cause functional issues like peripheral vision loss, especially in the outer and upper visual fields. Lower eyelid surgery targets puffy bags & loose skin, creating a smoother, refreshed look.

3. Restore Function & Appearance

By eliminating excess tissue, blepharoplasty restores your natural eye contour while improving vision and reducing eye fatigue caused by drooping skin. The result? A brighter, more youthful appearance that feels as good as it looks.

4. Enhancing Skin Rejuvenation

To further enhance results, we may incorporate laser treatments during the procedure. These boost healing and improve skin texture, leaving you with smoother, revitalised skin around the eyes.

Blepharoplasty FAQ's

Blepharoplasty restores the natural beauty of the eye, as well as your field of vision. Having excess skin and fat removed will make the eyelid look smoother, more youthful and improve peripheral vision while reducing the fatigue associated with it. During surgery, chemical peels or laser treatments could be used to enhance the healing process and improve the appearance of your skin.

Results will typically last anywhere from 5-7 years.

Following blepharoplasty, patients may experience variations in their vision as they recover. As the eye tissues gradually heal, it is not unusual for individuals to encounter temporary blurriness mainly due to dryness on the surface of the eyes.

Surgical procedures are generally irreversible. Nevertheless, in numerous instances, revision surgery can be performed to address any dissatisfying outcomes. However, it is advisable to wait until your eyes have completely healed before contemplating revision surgery.

Blepharoplasty does not help dry eyes. Dry eyes may be temporarily worse post surgery and a conservative approach to skin removal is necessary.

After undergoing a blepharoplasty procedure, certain patients may encounter temporary ptosis. This occurrence is entirely normal and commonly arises due to swelling, bruising, or swelling of the eyelid. In such instances, the drooping effect should resolve within a few weeks.

During the healing process of eye tissues, it is not unusual for vision to temporarily become blurry or disoriented. However, it is important to note that these effects are transitory, and typically, within two or three days, your vision should revert back to normal.

Complications in blepharoplasty are infrequent, and if they do arise, they typically manifest as mild such as dryness or excessive scarring. Some patients are more prone to scarring than others particularly patients of Asian origin.

After the surgery, it is normal for your eyelid to experience swelling and bruising, which may last for a duration of 1 to 2 weeks. The appearance of your eye will likely continue to improve over a period of 1 to 3 months. Typically, individuals feel prepared to resume public activities and return to work within approximately 10 to 14 days. However, the specific timing may vary depending on the nature of your job and your comfort level regarding others being aware of your surgery.

In general, an upper-eyelid blepharoplasty is deemed medically necessary when the skin of the upper eyelid droops to a degree that obstructs vision, particularly within the superior visual fields. You will need a visual field test to determine this problem.

We provide a lower blepharoplasty or eye bag removal surgery for individuals of both genders who have signs of aging around their eyes. The aim of the surgery is mainly to reduce fat pockets under the eyes. If wrinkles are a particular concern then conservative removal of some skin can be done but only a small amount of skin should be removed as too much can cause eyelid retraction.

An eyelid lift can be safely conducted using local anesthesia, conscious sedation, or general anesthesia. At Eyes, lids and Face clinic, we primarily utilize local anesthesia for blepharoplasty procedures. This approach is favored due to its enhanced safety and cost-effectiveness compared to general anesthesia.
